This innovative degree programme has been designed collaboratively with local, national and international employers to provide the knowledge, skills and qualification requirements for higher Engineering Design and R&D roles within the Motorsport industry. The specialist nature of this programme provides graduates with niche skills that allow them to contend for positions with the Motorsport industry’s highest profile employers within Motorsport Research, Development, Manufacture and Quality Assurance. Our alumni have forged successful careers with companies such as Jaguar Land Rover, Ford Motor Company, Bentley, Lotus, M-Sport and Westfield Sportscars. Others have opted for postgraduate study, such as Lancaster University’s MSc Mechanical Engineering.

To progress to the top-up year you will need to successfully complete the Foundation Degree.
2017 Entry Requirements
A new UCAS Tariff will be used for courses starting from September 2017, the new entry requirements are as follows;
Only students who have studied the Foundation Degree in Automotive Engineering and Technology (Motorsport) at Blackpool and The Fylde College and have achieved a minimum of a pass will be considered for this top-up course.

Modules and Assessment
This BEng top-up is the Level 6 progression for students who have completed the Foundation Degree in Automotive Engineering and Technology (Motorsport). This Motorsport degree covers the aims of the QAA Benchmark Statement for Engineering and the learning outcomes are based on those published by the Engineering Council in the UK; the standard for professional Engineering competence (UK-SPEC).
The course is made up of three subject specific modules and a dissertation and further develops your knowledge and skills in areas previously studied at Level 5.

BEA1021 Dissertation - 40 credits
BEA1022 Dynamic Simulation - 20 credits
BEA1023 Alternative Power Sources - 20 credits
BEA1025 Race Engine Design Simulation & Analysis - 40 credits
Here you will investigate a number of major scientific principles within race engine design. The module will encompass all the main aspects of the industry-standard Gamma Technologies GT-Suite software package. The software and theories applied throughout this module will lead you towards the cutting edge of the competition engine design industry and provide you with the knowledge and skills required of a motorsport design and validation simulation engineer.

Summative assessment consists of two exams for modules Dynamic Simulation and Alternative Power Sources. The dissertation module is assessed through the production of an extended dissertation enquiry with an accompanying showcase. In module Race Engine Design Simulation and Analysis an extended year-long project is assessed by means of a correlational prototype project with an accompanying presentation. All other summative assessments consist of coursework activities to include case studies, reports and simulations.

Teaching and Learning Methods
Teaching will be by a combination of lectures, seminars, practical laboratories and formative assignments, supported where appropriate by other methods such as guest lectures, blended learning, tutorials, industry visits and work placement.
Work Placement and Field Trips
There is no formal requirement for students to undertake a work placement within this honours top-up programme. Teaching, learning and assessment methods however, incorporate current industry trends, practices and emerging technologies and may include real-world scenarios or live assessment briefs where appropriate.
All staff involved in the delivery of higher education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant vocational and industrial experience and professional practice.

We provide all specialist software requirements, most of which is available remotely providing you have a computer with internet access. You will need to provide your own protective overalls and safety boots for carrying out practical activities in workshops and laboratories. You will also need a scientific calculator and technical drawing apparatus.
