Business - Level 3 90 Credit Diploma (Edexcel)
Qualification Obtained: 90-credit Diploma in Business (QCF)
The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 90-credit Diploma in Business is a 90-credit qualification that consists of four mandatory units plus 5 specialist units that provide for a combined total of 90 credits. This course has been designed for 19+ learners who wish to go on to progress to Higher Education or open up new progression opportunities in employment.
Course Entry Requirements
At least five GCSEs at Grade A*-C or equivalent, including Grade C in Maths or English.
Career Options and Progression
The majority (80%) of students progress to Higher Education, many choosing to study Degrees in Management or Accounting at our University Centre. Our students also gain employment and Apprenticeships with local businesses. There are many opportunities for entrepreneur and employees with a sound understanding of finance, marketing, sales and management. The qualification has been designed in close collaboration with industry, it is fully supported by the Sector Skills Council and a range of organisations and employers meaning it is a highly respected route into employment and HE.
Modules and Assessment
The Level 3 Edexcel 90 credit Diploma is a practical business-related course equivalent to 1.5 GCE A Levels and provides both a broad foundation of business education. This one-year programme is full-time, Monday to Friday (16 to 18 hours per week).
During the first year of Study you will cover the following modules:
- Business Resources (Core)
- Business Environment (Core)
- Marketing (Core)
- Business Communication (Core)
- Business Accountancy (Optional)
- Recruitment and Selection (Optional)
- Developing Teams in business (Optional)
- Managing a Business Event (Optional)
- Understanding Retail (Optional)
All units are internally set. An overall grade for the qualification is awarded to all learners who successfully complete all units. Grades awarded are Pass, Merit and Distinction.

Teaching and Learning Methods
The knowledge and understanding for the units are taught in comfortable rooms using interactive technology to deliver the information. You will be guided carefully through each topic in a well-structured programme and assignments will be broken down into bite-size chunks to help you to achieve them. Tutors will also be available to give you assistance with your assignments through assignment workshops which form part of your timetable. In addition to the learning that takes place in the College, you will also be expected to take part in the programme of educational visits and speakers which will help you to apply your knowledge to 'real' organisations.

You can learn a great deal about the industry in the classroom. Work Experience placements provide the opportunity to put the theory into practice
In addition to the skills to be experienced in the world of work, your Work Experience placement enhances career opportunities. You are in direct contact with potential employers and during your placement you can demonstrate your skills and attributes, which can provide a direct route to employment on completion of the programme.
The placement is intended to allow you to:
- Obtain valuable experience in working practices within business
- Develop professionally and personally.
The period within industry provides opportunities to develop a further understanding of the industry. This allows you to integrate and apply your studies into a practical environment, and gather experience to enrich and apply to your studies.
Each Student is expected to complete a minimum of 20 hours’ work placement.
All staff involved in the delivery of further education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant vocational and industrial experience and professional practice.

You may be required to pay for visits included in the course; however costs may vary as this depends on travel costs and entry fees at the time
