About this Course:

This Autosport Technology programme allows access to a unique level of industry standard research and development equipment that is all located within the learning environment. The course operates in close collaboration with specialist companies.

On programme the learner will take a journey from initial concept and design to research, development and testing, through implementation of 'real-world' Autosport applications.

What are we Looking for?

We are looking for people who have an interest in Automotive/Autosport engineering together with appropriate academic qualifications and/or relevant industrial experience.

We are also looking for people who, on successful completion of the course, will endorse our reputation for producing students with excellent employability skills.

Every application is treated individually this is particularly true for mature students whose life experiences may, to a certain degree, mitigate a lack of some academic qualifications.

Is this the right course for me?

This is the right course for you if you have an interest in Automotive/Autosport engineering and seek knowledge of electrical and electronic principles and how they are applied in a variety of contexts.

You must have a realisation that the course is vocationally orientated and that there is a mix of formal classroom lectures and work of a more practical nature.

What Skills, Qualities and Experience do I need?

  • You will need a real interest and enthusiasm for engineering.
  • Any work-related experience would be beneficial.
  • An ability to persevere with the more theoretical aspects of the course, especially those of a mathematical nature, would be desirable.
  • All applicants are viewed in terms of their employability.
  • Thus you will need to demonstrate communication skills, commitment, punctuality, regular attendance and recognition of one's responsibilities as a student and potential employee.

Assessment Methods:

The assessments consist of assignments and formal exams. The exams are usually sat at the end of each semester (February and June).

Progression:

Successful students will be able to progress on to the Masters programme in Engineering delivered by Lancaster University or alternatively enter straight into industry. Past students have gone on to work for Race Teams such as Porsche.

There are 3 bridging modules and 8 mandatory modules:

  • Engine Test Analysis
  • Advanced Engine Mapping Strategies
  • Advanced Data Logging Strategies (optional)
  • Alternative Power Sources (optional)
  • Dissertation (Double)
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics
  • GT-Power (Double)

Teaching Methods:

These can include lectures, practical activities in workshops, laboratory work and demonstrations, directed and independent learning, group work, tutorials and seminars.

The weekly timetable averages at 13-15 hours per week. There is a facility for one-to one tutorials.

The School of Engineering and Computing offers an Open Door policy whereby teaching staff and some resources such as computer rooms can be accessed on an informal basis throughout the week.

Skills Developed:

Students will develop research and development skills based on Engine and Race car design. They will also learn how to manage and be part of a real life Race Team experiencing the demand of Race Technicians within a race environment.

General:

  • Numeracy, communication, ability to apply technology, the managing and developing of one's self, being able to work with and relate to others, the ability to apply design and be creative.

Specific:

  • Knowledge of the underlying mathematical and scientific principles used in automotive engineering.
  • Knowledge of the design and operation of automotive engineering systems.
  • Ability to analyse and model automotive engineering systems.
  • An awareness of Health and Safety issues including risk assessment and appropriate legislation.
  • Knowledge of project management principles, methodologies, tools and techniques that may be used in any industry, the professions and the public sector

Providing you meet the criteria, you can then apply for your course. Full-time applications go through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), although foundation degree graduates progressing to a relevant top-up programme can (subject to certain criteria) apply to the College direct.
