About this Course:

The programme is intended for all those serious about a career as a professional actor. This comprehensive and demanding course is designed to produce highly competent performers/practitioners to be able to work across a variety of performance mediums both on stage and TV and film. Throughout the three years you will develop into a reflective, analytical and versatile performer. You will receive an excellent grounding in a range of techniques in preparation for work within the arts industry.

What are we Looking for?

The criteria for admission onto the course are the student's suitability and perceived ability to complete the course successfully. This is principally demonstrated through audition and interview in addition to the minimum entry requirement of 120 UCAS points, excluding Key Skills. There is no maximum age restriction.

What Skills, Qualities and Experience do I need?

Essential qualities will include commitment, dedication, and a real passion for your subject. Rehearsals can be physically demanding and will require you to be self motivated, analytical and career focussed

Assessment Methods:

Assessment is continuous and measured against learning outcomes. It is monitored through class work, scene studies, workshops, performances and formal essays and journals.

Feedback is provided in both formal and informal sessions and this forms an integral part of the learning process. A formal Progress Review takes place at the end of each term this monitors and tracks your assessment and achievement.

Progression:

On successful completion students will normally progress directly into the Arts Industry to work as performers or practitioners. Progression opportunities to study at post graduate level also are encouraged.

You will form part of a professional theatre Company working on a range of practical production units supported by the analytical study of theoretical practitioners. We offer a unique opportunity to work within a professional environment whilst allowing you the freedom to develop and experiment as a performing artist

Course Options:

L1 provides an introduction to the fundamental principles that form the basis of actor training. The programme consists of acting, voice, movement, singing and contextual studies. Much of the focus in the first year is centred around Stanislavski's approach to acting comprehensive classes and rehearsal projects will introduce you to the conceptual elements of the work and enable you to develop into an expressive, flexible and analytical performer. Scene studies will focus on texts from the naturalistic canon and from the Shakespearean repertoire. You will also undertake a major production at the end of this year.

  • Acting - Core skills and concepts of acting.
  • Voice
  • Singing
  • Physical Skills yoga, Alexander technique, Laban, Pilates, animal study
  • Scene study - application of key skills to realise scenes from a text chosen from the Naturalism cannon.
  • Scene study project examining approaches to Shakespearean text
  • Contextual study programme relevant to practical work.
  • Development and extension of core skills.
  • Final year project

L2 will provide you with further opportunities to develop skills acquired in the first year. A number of contrasting projects will equip actors to rise to the challenge of working on a variety of scripted projects. Students will explore a wide range of non-naturalistic genres from Epic, Greek, Absurd and Avant Garde and Contemporary Theatre which will introduce you to new modes of acting, staging and playwriting.

Year 2 (Units may include)

  • Voice - chorus and ensemble work.
  • Physical skills acting through movement, stage combat, neutral & character mask
  • Singing acting through song
  • Acting classes and studio presentation of non-naturalistic text including Brecht, Pinter, Bond, Beckett
  • Contextual study programme relevant to practical work.
  • The development and extension of acting skills.
  • Acting classes and collaborative studio production of poetic texts.
  • Final project public performance

L3 requires you to focus on your professional development and prepares you for work in the industry. You may undertake a wide variety of plays to extend your performance repertoire. By the end of this year, you will have attained the professionalism that will equip you for the highly competitive career of acting. Workshops take place in the final year focusing on audition and interview techniques. A Showcase performance is presented in a major theatre for an invited audience of agents, casting directors across stage, film, and T.V.

Year 3 (Units may include)

  • Approaches to radio and microphone technique.
  • Television and film project and acting to camera.
  • Research project and dissertation.
  • Public performances.
  • Professional preparation workshops and Showcase

Teaching Methods:

Teaching will centre around rehearsal sessions, formal lectures, group seminars and 1:1 advice & guidance. Hours will be demanding and will increase during production weeks. Support is available through our dedicated HE support team.

Skills Developed:

You will be provided with a clear understanding of the interrelated nature of all elements of the Performing Arts Business enabling you to pursue a lifelong career in the Performing Arts Industry.

Full-time applications go through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), although foundation degree graduates progressing to a relevant top-up programme can (subject to certain criteria) apply to the College direct.
