A great time to be in construction

If you’re considering a career in construction there’s never been a better time to make your mark. The construction industry is the largest industry in the UK but even so, companies are struggling to recruit technical professional staff.

Alumnus interview:

Lindsay Allen - HND Interior Design and Architectural studies

lindsay_allen.jpgI originally studied a part time Commercial Interior Design course at College and enjoyed it so much, I decided to carry on into Higher Education – it’s really convenient having a suitable course local to where I live.

I learned all aspects of design and construction on the course. We were taught how to design rooms both practically and with finesse and I enjoyed the practical projects where we had to make a piece of furniture. There were just so many subjects to study – it never got boring and now when I’m on a job with other traders I know what they are talking about.

I love my job – every day is different. I do everything from meeting new clients, advising them, shopping for stock, painting and decorating and adding those all important finishing touches. It can be difficult being a female in this industry but I’m pleased to be breaking down the barriers bit by bit!

To be an Interior Designer you need to be a people person, be friendly, determined, hard working and have a flexible approach to work. My time at College was a lot of hard work but well worth it!
