The Story of Stuff, Green Dragon’s Den and an electric race car will all feature in Blackpool and The Fylde College’s second annual Green Week, from 28 February - 4 March. Students and staff across all campuses are being encouraged to ‘Love Your Future, Love Your Climate’ as a host of activities take place to raise awareness and promote sustainability.
A week of themed days begins with Red Meat Free Monday, when no red meat will be served in any of the College’s canteens and refectories all day long. The College is also encouraging students and staff to try being a part time carnivore – regular red meat free Mondays will save an estimated 8kg CO2 per week.
Travel Light Tuesday will see Westfield Sportscars displaying their iRACER electric race car at the Bispham Campus in a bid to promote greener travel alternatives. Motor Vehicle students have also sprayed a car green for people to add their eco-friendly messages to during the week.
On Waste Not Wednesday, the ‘Cans’ film festival arrives at the University Centre. Students will be able to watch a movie in the lecture theatre for an admission fee of 10 empty drink cans to recycle! There will also be a stitch and fix event where students can bring worn out or old clothes and rejuvenate or embellish them.
Renewable energy sources will be the feature on Switch off Thursday – the College’s Engineering department will showcase solar and wind power at the Bispham Campus.
Green week culminates with a Green fancy dress day at Ansdell Campus on Friday, dubbed a national day of action, to raise money for Oxfam.
Throughout the week, students will also be able to enter the ‘Green Dragon's Den’ if they dare… A special pod will be set up for budding environmentalists to give their ideas on how to address environmental issues around College and in the wider community. A green panel of Dragons will pick a winning idea to implement.
The Story of Stuff, a short film about the life cycle of everyday products, will be shown in tutorials during Green Week and students will complete a questionnaire to give an insight into how environmentally aware they are.
Sustainability Officer Pam Reynolds said:
“Green Week is a great chance for Colleges and Universities to embed all kinds of sustainability into the curriculum. This is the second year Blackpool and The Fylde College has taken part and we hope the increased number of events and activities will make 2011 even more successful.”
Rachael Hirst, Student Union Environmental Officer who has helped with preparations, added:
“I’m looking forward to Green Week, particularly being a judge in the Dragon’s Den. I’m sure I won’t be as scary as they are on the telly though! I hope all the other students enjoy it and learn a lot about how to be more environmentally friendly.”
