Music Inspires Students’ Hair Show

Genres of Music was the theme for Blackpool and The Fylde College’s charity Hair Show 2011, organised and produced by students from the College.

Around 80 students from the Level 3 diploma in Hairdressing students and Level 3 Media Make Up were involved with the production, which is a great opportunity for them to showcase their skills to members of the public and potential employers.

Students chose a category within the theme and created a full look for their model based on the music, including hair, make up and an outfit. The song choices included well know favourites from Punk, the 1980’s, RnB, Divas and Rock and Roll music!

Students take the opportunity to raise money for charity too – over £1,000 was raised on the night for Help for heroes, the Antony Nolan Trust and Brian House and students started fundraising well before the event by making and selling creative baubles for Christmas, running a ‘guess how many sweets in a jar’ contest, organising cake sales at College and holding a Pamper Day for staff and students.

Curriculum Manager Patricia Hadley said:

“The students manage every aspect of the event themselves, from finding and booking a venue to choosing a theme and actually styling models on the night. It gives them managerial and organisational skills that they’ll find useful if they open their own salon one day, and giving them ownership of the event means they can be proud of what they achieved.”

Event Coordinator Rebecca Johnson, a Level 3 Hairdressing student, said:

“We had fun planning the Hair Show, but it was a lot of hard work too. I'm really pleased with how well it went on the night!”
