Eco friendly fashion students at Blackpool and The Fylde College embarked on a mission to make green the new black with the very first ‘Mend not Spend Day’, aimed at raising awareness of recycling and restyling clothing and accessories.
Staff and students from around the College donated old clothes, hats, bags and other accessories and future fashionistas from the School of Art, Media and Performance worked hard to transform them into glamorous one-off pieces and restyled works of art.
Guests at the fair were able to buy exclusively designed t-shirts featuring a series of logos generated by the students, along with funky re-styled clothing, hats and accessories plus beautiful hand made jewellery and corsages.
Students also invited guests to bring along their own clothes and gave masterclasses on how to update them with a sewing machine and a little creativity. Lancaster Oxfam were also on hand selling a range of fairtrade and econd hand designer clothing.
Sustainability Officer Pam Reynolds said: "We want to get people to think about re-using their clothes instead of just throwing them away. Clothes are so cheap now - people buy stuff and throw it away after only wearing it a few times. We want to encourage them to resist fad fashion.
Ellie Jakeman, Programme Leader for Fashion and Clothing added: "Everyone has been buying all sorts, it's been very succsessful."
