Media Students Treated to Daybreak Masterclass

Media students from Blackpool and The Fylde College were overjoyed when they were treated to an impromptu masterclass from Daybreak Chief Correspondent Richard Gaisford and his crew.

The group of 18 students, who are studying in their second year for a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Media Production, were showcasing at WorldSkills London 2011, filming and creating video blogs of the occasion – dubbed the largest ever international skills Competition and careers event.

While working, the students were asked to come in early to appear on the ITV morning show as they broadcast live from Excel. Despite a 5.30am start, the group relished the chance to represent the College on national television and learn from the professionals.

After being filmed ‘Having a Go’ on some of the many stands at WorldSkills, the students were delighted when presenter Richard, the camera man and sound man agreed to give the group tips about how to get into the media industry, and offer an insight into what it’s like working in production. They even let the group have hands on experience with some of their live outside broadcast equipment

Student Ryan Baxter, 18, from Blackpool said:

“I enjoyed going to WorldSkills because it was a great opportunity to show our skills at such a prestigious event. Being on Daybreak was certainly well worth the early start as we got to speak with industry professionals on how to get started.” Matt Langhorn, 17, added that he “found the trip incredibly enriching, and in parts overwhelming. It is definitely an experience to remember.”

Curriculum Manager Helen Chiula felt that:

“Filming and editing at WorldSkills gave the students a completely new experience to put their expertise into action. When they asked us to return early for the ITV show it allowed them to see first hand how certain things are put together. They became runners for the morning. The crew spent a long time personally talking to the students. Some will even take up the offer of work experience from their meeting.”
