Go Green Week Comes to College

Blackpool and The Fylde College students are being told ‘fall in love with your climate’ as the College launches its first ever Go Green Week from 8-12 February.

A full programme of events is planned for the week, all of which carry an environmental message.

Highlights include ‘UC Unplugged’– a night of acoustic music and poetry performed by students by candlelight and the College screening of climate blockbuster ‘The Age of Stupid’, a film starring Pete Postlethwaite (Jurassic Park, Romeo and Juliet), where students get free admission and free popcorn!

Think Green Fairs will be taking place throughout the week at different campuses where staff and students will be able to learn about animal rights, climate change issues and enjoy free organic food, plus they can vow to make a change by attaching their pledge to the specially designed ‘Pledge Hedge’.

Elsewhere, students will be carrying out energy surveys with the aim of identifying areas where the College can be more energy efficient, plus there will be a week long competition for students to design a Valentine’s Day card with an eco theme or using recycled materials.

Any money raised during the week will be donated to green charity People and Planet, who will attend College on Monday to do an interactive presentation and workshop about climate change to FE students.

Student Union Environmental Officer Rachel Hirst said:

“Go Green Week has been a great event to plan. The small changes make a big difference and if we can work together to make a change and tackle the problems we’re facing and have some laughs along the way then it’s not such a bad thing.”

Blackpool and The Fylde College Sustainability Officer Pamela Reynolds added:

“We’ve got a great week of green events for everyone at the College to enjoy but there’s a serious message too. Hopefully it will make people think about how their everyday actions can affect the planet and take action.”
