Higher Education was on the agenda at the Blackpool Young People’s Council’s latest meeting, which was held for the first time at Blackpool and The Fylde College’s University Centre.

As one of the UK’s largest FE providers of degree level education, the College was keen to work with the Council to promote the opportunities to young people in the town. The College extended an invitation to the group to come and tour its facilities and hear about the great courses on offer.

Director of Communications, Andy Iredale, gave a presentation about the University Centre before showing the group around the campus including the Gallery, Theatre, Recording Studio, Dance Studio and state-of-the-art Learning Resource Centre.

He said:

“Keeping our skilled young people in the town is great for regeneration and for Blackpool’s future. We wanted to show them that they have access to degrees of the highest quality, validated by Lancaster University – one of the top 10 universities in the UK as ranked by the Times, Guardian and Complete University Guides.

“We hope that by working with the Young People’s Council, we can help young people in the town to understand what a fantastic university centre they have right on their doorstep.”

Following the visit, Chair of Blackpool Young People’s Council, Nicole Burke, said:

“It’s very nice here. The facilities are really good and the new building is amazing. I was surprised to hear about the range of degrees offered at the University Centre and I hope more young people get to hear about it.”

A total of 865 students graduated from the College’s University Centre earlier this month during two ceremonies held at the Winter Gardens.
