Once you apply to one of our BA (Hons) Programmes, you will receive confirmation that we have received your application.
You will then receive a letter asking you to attend an audition and interview for your chosen course. We will send this approximately 3 weeks prior to the audition date to give you sufficient time to prepare however all details of what you will need to prepare are available on the above
Please note that the Audition is your opportunity to demonstrate your full potential. Many UK acting schools restrict applicants to a 3 minute audition, by comparison Blackpool & The Fylde College offers a period of up to 6 hours, which include opportunities for you to ask questions and engage with staff.
Once you arrive
We will ask you to make your way to our University Centre where Tony Dalnas (Curriculum Leader) or one of his team will meet you.
The Audition
The audition process is composed of 3 key stages:
Stage 1 – Presentation of rehearsed material i.e. speeches & song (Acting programme) / speeches, songs & dance excerpt. (Musical Theatre programme only)
Stage 2 – Workshops. Candidates will engage in a number of workshops specific to their programme area e.g. voice, singing, dance, movement & acting
Stage 3 – Interview with Academic Team
Stage 1
All candidates will perform a selection of their pre-rehearsed material for the Academic Team. The panel will observe each dance excerpt and choose one speech and one song (Musical Theatre programme) / and one modern and classical speech & song (Acting programme). Please note that you may be requested to perform another piece from your repertoire at this key stage.
Important notice – All applicants will be informed of their audition progress on completion of Stage 1. However, only selected candidates from this stage will be invited to stay and continue onto Stage 2 of the audition process.
Stage 2
Invited candidates only will take part in a range of workshops whereby the Academic Team can assess each individual’s ability to:
Acting (Acting & Musical Theatre programme)
Listen, engage and interact with group
Create specific relationships between characters and react truthfully in both improvised or scripted material
Respond in detail with knowledge and understanding to questions
Share views and ideas confidently and appropriately
Voice (Acting programme)
Utilises a supported and free vocal tone consistently
Demonstrate consistent vocal flexibility in response to character, form and style
Demonstrate flexible use of articulation
Have an awareness of their vocal skills and weakness
Demonstrate vocal variety in both learnt text and reading aloud
Movement for the Actor (Acting programme)
Demonstrate ability to work effectively in ensemble
Show awareness and basic knowledge of different movement methodologies
Demonstrate practical understanding of different movement techniques
Demonstrate consistent physical flexibility in response to character, form and style
Be able to identify and develop the physical characteristics of a character
Be able to create a truthful physicality within imaginary circumstances
Be able to make personal connections to physical interplay
Dance (Musical Theatre programme)
Maintain a consistently high level of stamina, strength and flexibility
Demonstrate consistent level ability to self-correct technical faults
Reproduce the physical characteristics of a specific dance style with some accuracy
Demonstrate musicality and use of technique throughout
Sequence moves without too much difficulty
Show physical co-ordination and awareness of body
Display evidence of pre dance training
Singing (Musical Theatre programme)
Accurately sings back melodic phrases
Perform as a member of an ensemble with confidence, interpretation and artistic flair
Accurately maintains harmony-line throughout
Demonstrate good sight-singing ability
Communicate a sense of character through song
Stage 3
Interview (Acting & Musical Theatre programme)
Demonstrate knowledge and interest in subject area
Demonstrate interest in society, politics and history
Be able to critically evaluate their own and others performances
Has the right approach to professional training
Applicants will generally receive feedback and suggestions during the audition, however a decision will be made once the audition has been completed. The decision will be with UCAS within 10 working days from the audition. You will be able to view this decision using the online Track facility
You will be expected to be in attendance until 5.00pm at the latest.
