Nail Service is a growing industry, with more and more people being drawn to the feel-good factor of well-groomed nails. Nowadays, in most UK town and city centres you don’t have to wander very far before finding a nail bar.

If you’re confident and get on well with different sorts of people, have an interest in fashion and accessories and an eye for detail this could be a fun and rewarding career. Working with an experienced nail technician you will learn the skills needed to care for, repair, extend and decorate nails. You’ll also learn about health and safety and how to look after the reception area.

Once qualified, you might decide to go self-employed or even set up your own business. Additional qualifications would help with this: our Foundation Degree – Professional Practice in Beauty Therapy is one option.

A few technicians work with photographers and fashion designers, producing spectacular nails for photo shoots or fashion shows. Work abroad is also possible. Skills for life to take anywhere in the world....

What job might the Apprentice be doing?

Nail technician, manicures, pedicures, hand and nail treatments, nail extensions and natural nail wraps, session and photographic nail artist. Planning, designing and creating images for nail art techniques, enhancing the appearance of natural nails using a range of artificial nail systems, maintaining and repairing nails.

What does the Apprenticeship involve?

The NVQ covers health and safety, promoting additional products and services, manicures, pedicure with optional units coving financial effectiveness, maintain and repair and enhance artificial nail systems.

Progression opportunities

The Apprenticeship progression to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Nail Services, develop further skills in beauty therapy, salon management or ownership. Further opportunities to work on cruise liners, film and photographic studios.
