Get off to a Flying Start
The Aviation Academy and its exciting new Aeronautical Engineering programme introduces you to a wide range of aircraft subjects, giving you the chance to develop your engineering skills to a high standard. Aeronautical engineers should have a logical approach to solving problems, have good numeracy and computing skills, be able to read and interpret diagrams, drawings and work well with others.
Most engineers specialise in a particular area, such as research, design, testing, manufacture or maintenance. The aerospace industry is well established in the UK and constant expansion in air travel means that there are many roles available.
Meet the Apprentice
Alex Cross, age 18
Alex Cross, is a former Student Ambassador at Blackpool and The Fylde College. He is currently undertaking an apprenticeship at Silverstar Maintenance and studying for his level 2 apprenticeship.
“When I heard someone else from College had an apprenticeship at Silverstar Maintenance I thought it sounded exactly like what I wanted to do, so I sent off an application. They weren’t recruiting at the time so I offered to work there voluntarily to get some experience initially. Luckily they thought I showed promise and worked hard and decided to keep me on for the apprenticeship.”
“It’s great working here – it’s a really diverse environment and I’ve learnt so much about the aeronautic industry. Also, being given responsibility at this stage in your career sets you up for the future.”
“Coming to College helps as I’ll be able to gain qualifications as well as receiving specialist industry training, and it’s nice to know I’ve got the support there if I need it. I’m really pleased I decided on an apprenticeship.”
Meet the Boss
Joanna Ward, Operations Manager, Command Aviation Group
“Our apprentices are in a great position – they have long term prospects here and can eventually work towards the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority) license, allowing them to effectively sign off an aeroplane as safe to fly. Jobs then start at £45,000 so the hard work they are putting in now will pay off.”
“If someone had come to us straight from College with similar qualifications as an apprentice, they’d effectively have to start back at the bottom as its such a specialised industry, so the apprentices really are getting a step ahead.”
“We take on apprentices here at Silverstar Maintenance as it enables us to train them to do things our way without them having been moulded by a different company or industry. We find they also show a lot of loyalty if they come here as an apprentice, plus we can monitor their work and if there are certain areas where they excel, we can make them even more specialised or allow them to explore different avenues to maximise their potential.”
