Apprenticeships - Earn While You Learn

On the job training as an Apprentice or Advanced Apprentice gives you the opportunity to learn and develop vital skills in the workplace while gaining a formal qualification.

Better still, it allows you to earn a training wage at the same time. No wonder so many Apprentices describe their training as ‘the best of both worlds!’

About NVQs and Technical Certificates

National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are based on agreed standards of competence and skills in the workplace. Being awarded an NVQ means you’ve reached the standards set for the industry you work in and the level you’ve been working towards.

You can study for NVQs at level 2 (foundation skills), level 3 (supervisory skills) and level 4 (management skills). There is no NVQ Level 1 Apprenticeship.

Technical Certificates are qualifications that give you the knowledge and understanding you need for work-based learning.

Their contents vary from industry to industry, but all include studies in Employment Rights and Responsibilities that cover equal opportunities, employment law, and health and safety

Who can become an Apprentice?

An Apprenticeship is for anyone who wants to gain a formal qualification that will help them achieve more in their work.

One important difference between a ‘traditional’ apprenticeship and today’s Apprenticeships, however, is that there’s no longer an upper age limit.

That means anyone who missed out in their younger years for whatever reason now has a route back into education and a chance to gain those all-important qualifications second time around.

Your first step should be to complete an application form and send it to the Work Based Learning team, room T011, Blackpool and the Fylde College, Ashfield Road, Bispham, Blackpool FY2 0HB. For more information on see our How to Apply section.

Key Skills Training

All Apprenticeships have an element of ‘Key Skills’ learning. This is a term that covers the fundamental skills you need every day in your job and for your studies at college.

They include written and verbal communication, the application of number and a certain amount of ICT training.

Key skills are available from levels 1 to 4, with wider skills training in teamwork and problem-solving also available.
