Apprenticeships - How to Apply

Becoming an Apprentice

To begin an Apprenticeship, you should ideally be employed already. Some employers may be prepared to accept trainees direct from College and the Apprenticeship Team will do their best to place you in work if you don’t yet have a job.

To apply, just fill in an application form, pop it in an envelope and return it to us at the address included at the end of the form (also below). You can download an Application Form or we can post you one.

Filling in your form

You can apply for both a full-time course and an Apprenticeship, providing an Apprenticeship is available. Not all vocational areas offer Apprenticeships – check the relevant course section for details.

Please complete the form clearly in black ink. For full-time courses only, please fill in all areas (plus Section 1 but not Section 2). For Apprenticeships only, please fill in all areas (plus Section 2 but not Section 1). Everyone needs to complete both sides of this form to avoid their application being delayed. Before you return your form to us, please make sure you’ve included the course name you’re applying for. You should also keep a copy.

We will let you know the date and time for an interview and assessment. If you need to get in touch with us about your application please contact the Work Based Learning Team on one of the numbers listed on the Contacts page, who’ll be happy to answer your questions.

Criminal convictions

The criminal convictions you must tell us about (ie tick the ‘yes’ box) are convictions for offences against the person, whether of a violent or sexual nature, and convictions for offences involving unlawfully supplying controlled drugs or substances where the conviction concerns commercial drug dealing or trafficking. You don’t need to tell us about convictions that are spent (as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974).

However, for courses in teaching, health, social care, gaming and courses involving working with children or vulnerable adults as well as courses that feature a work placement, any criminal convictions, including sentences and cautions (including verbal cautions), reprimands, final warnings and bindover orders are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. In other words, if you are applying for one of the above courses and have a criminal conviction, you must tick the ‘yes’ box. If you do tick the ‘yes’ box we will then contact you for more information.

You may also be subject to statutory background checks to assess your suitability to undertake any placements required as part of your course. If you are convicted of one of the above criminal offences after you have applied, you must let us know immediately. Again, we will then ask you for more details.

Your interview

As part of the application process, you’ll need to attend a one-to-one interview at the College with the tutor of the course you’re hoping to enrol on.

During your interview, you’ll be given a simple English and Maths assessment. Don’t worry too much about passing it with flying colours; it’s just a way for us to determine the level of support, if any, that you’ll need with your Key/Function Skills during your Apprenticeship.
