Move your career forward with a higher or degree apprenticeship

Higher and degree apprenticeships combine skilled on-the-job training with higher level study, allowing you to develop the skills needed to move your career forward.

For further details please call us on 0330 024 1234.

What are higher and degree apprenticeships?

Higher and degree apprenticeships are high-quality alternatives to a more traditional degree route. They are designed to deliver the exact skills needed by your employer, giving you the technical and professional expertise to move your career forward.

Higher apprenticeships are delivered at levels 4 and 5 and include technical and professional and academic qualifications. Some higher apprenticeships include a foundation degree, which can be ‘topped up’ to a full honours award with a further year of study. Degree apprenticeships include a full bachelor's and/or master's degree.

How will you benefit?

  • Earn a living while learning
  • Fast-track your career
  • Achieve higher level qualifications without getting into debt
  • Gain valuable industry experience while studying
  • Put theory into practice
  • Gain professional membership and accreditation
  • Gain a Lancaster University accredited degree
  • Advance your career with a large, reputable employer

Why choose B&FC?

Blackpool and The Fylde College has an excellent reputation for delivering high quality apprenticeships, having built up a wealth of experience as well as strong relationships with local and national employers.

We created our first higher apprenticeship in 2008 in partnership with BAE Systems, which focused on the development of highly skilled project controllers. The programme is now nationally accredited by the Association for Project Management and embedded within a range of organisations, among them Rolls-Royce.

In 2014, 67% of candidates who took the honours route on the BAE-led Project Management Degree Apprenticeship were awarded first class honours (compared with the national average of 16%).

How do they work?

On a higher or degree apprenticeship you will develop employer-specific skills, knowledge and expertise while studying for a nationally-recognised and professionally-accredited academic qualification.

You will spend part of your time studying at Blackpool and The Fylde College, and the rest working for one of our partner employers. We will decide with your employer how best to structure this, for instance via a day or block release.

Throughout your apprenticeship you will be earning a full-time wage and gaining invaluable workplace experience. You will be supported throughout your studies and have access to all the help you need to succeed.

As with other apprenticeships, the cost of course fees is shared between the government and your employer. This means you can achieve a full higher technical and professional qualification without paying any fees or having to take out a loan.

Who can apply?

If you are 18 or over and committed to a particular career area, these courses are for you. Our partner employers are looking for people who are highly capable, motivated and ambitious, who can help to take their organisation forward.

Higher and degree apprenticeships are equally suited to young people as an alternative to the traditional degree route as they are to advanced apprentices looking to progress in their career.

If you are not sure whether an apprenticeship is right for you, you can continue to apply for degree courses via UCAS while you explore the alternative options. In the meantime, to find out more about higher and degree apprenticeships at B&FC please call us on T 0333 024 1234.
